The
Feed Program of the Asia
Subcontinent Regional Office
The
ASA-IM regional office in New
Delhi oversees soybean
promotion efforts in the Asia
Subcontinent (primarily India,
Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri
Lanka).
Promoting soybean
utilization specifically in
animal and fish feed
formulations is a major part
of the regional office’s
work, and is overseen by a
Feed Team that includes
consultants throughout the
region.
Feeding
demonstrations are conducted
to convince poultry producers,
dairy farmers, fish farmers,
feed millers, veterinarians,
and representatives from
allied industries of the
efficacy of soy inclusion in
feed formulations.
These demonstrations
and trials are conducted at
both private and government
facilities.
Seminars
and workshops are organized
throughout the region as a
platform to promote
utilization among the above
mentioned target audiences.
These events are
usually conducted on a
co-sponsorship basis.
Technical
information related to the
utilization of soybeans and
products is provided
electronically and in hard
copy to various target groups.
One-on-one
consultations are conducted
with key clients, to show the
effectiveness – and
potential profitability – of
increased soy utilization.
Whenever possible, the
utilization of US soy products
is specifically promoted and
purchasing assistance
provided.
Interested
entrepreneurs are exposed to
new technologies and business
opportunities through visits
to establish animal feed
operations, and they are
assisted with project
evaluation, planning, and
budgeting in the startup of
such soy-related industries.
Exhibitions
and trade shows are used as
platforms for extending
technical information to large
but targeted audiences.
Marketing
assistance is provided upon
request to new and also to
well-established feed-related
industries that are using
soybeans and / or soy
products.
Soybean
Products for the Animal Feed
Industry
Soybean Meal (SBM):
Soybean
meal is the product remaining
after extracting most of the
oil from whole soybeans. The
oil may be removed by solvent
extraction or by an expeller
process in which the beans are
heated and squeezed. The
protein content of SBM ranges
from 47.5% to 52% in the
de-hulled form, while the
protein content of non-dehulled
meal ranges from 42% to 47%.
The metabolisable energy for
poultry is 2300-2500 kcal/kg.
SBM is widely used in broiler
and layer feed formulations.
It is also used in
dairy and aqua feeds. The use
of SBM in animal feed rations
has revolutionized the
world’s feed industry.
Full
Fat Soybeans (FFSB):
Soybeans prior to oil
extraction are called full fat
soybeans and have value as a
feedstuff, owing to their high
oil (energy) and protein
content. Roasting increases
the bypass protein to 60% as
against 25-30% in raw beans.
Soybeans are rich in crude
protein (38-40%). A high level
of energy (3500-3750 K.
cal/kg) results from the
presence of 18-20% oil. Thus,
FFSB is particularly useful
for inclusion in high-energy
diets. The product has added
advantages in terms of its
mineral and vitamin content
(e.g., one kg of FFSB contains
2400 mg of sulphur, 40-55 g of
vitamin E, 2% lecithin, 10%
linoleic acid and 2000 mg of
choline.
Roasted or extruded
soybeans are generally
recommended for use in all
animal feeds, especially when
the aim is specifically to
exploit the full genetic
potential of animals and
improve feeding efficiency.
Soybean
Oil Meal (SBOM):
Soybeans are passed
through expellers and this
process removes about 10-12%
oil. While the removed oil is
used for human consumption,
the residual pressed cake
still contains 6-8% oil and
thus is referred to as SBOM.
It generally contains
42-44% protein and is
increasingly used in dairy
rations as a better
protein/energy source in place
of cottonseed, rapeseed,
groundnut or linseed cake.
With a relative low cost and a
dual function, it is popular
in dairy rations.
Soy
Protein Concentrates (SPC):
This is produced from
defatted soy flakes by
removing soluble
carbohydrates. The product has
a protein content of 58-65%,
depending on the manufacturing
process, and fat levels
ranging from 1-2.5%.
SPC offers a cost
efficient alternative to high
quality protein of animal
origin especially for
starter/juvenile feeds for
calves, piglets, fish, shrimp
and pets.
Soy
Hulls: Hulls
have about 9-12% protein, 80%
TDN and 35% fiber. With low
lignin content, the fiber in
hulls is highly digestible and
thus forms a ready energy
source. Hulls also yield a
stable fermentation pattern
when compared to other
forage/grain in feeds. With
hulls, dry matter
digestibility and feeding rate
is also improved.
This is a popular feed
ingredient for dairy cattle,
as they can replace large
amounts of dry matter (fodder)
without affecting
physiological processes.
Soy
Lecithin:
Soybeans are the most
common source for commercial
lecithin.
Soy oil has the highest
lecithin and phospholipids
content of any known oil.
Lecithin gums are obtained
from soy oil after the oil has
been extracted from flakes.
Lecithin contains about 50%
phospholipids and 25-30%
unrefined soy oil. It is an
excellent source for
phospholipids, as most animals
cannot synthesize this
component. Additionally, it
aids in stabilizing feed, as
an emulsifying agent, provides
anti-oxidant properties,
promotes fat absorption in the
digestive system and increases
energy efficiency of the feed.
It is generally used in
the liquid form ranging from
0.5-3% in all animal feeds.
Soybean
Oil:
This is a major source of
polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)
amounting to almost 85% of
fatty acids. The most dominant
PUFA are linolenic acid (55%),
linoleic acid (7%) and oleic
acid (24%). These special fat
components in soy oil benefit
many animal body functions and
are an ideal source of energy
in feeds. It is used as an
energy source at levels
ranging from 1-3% in all
animal feeds.
